Points to remember during antenatal Examination:
Maintaining respect and privacy;
- Create a peaceful and quiet environment.
- Make the woman feel comfortable and relaxed.
- Ensure confidentiality.
- Develop rapport.
- Record all data on the MCP card.
- Address unusual results
What are the signs and symptoms of complications?
- Fever
- Jaundice
- Consistent vomiting with dehydration
- Palpitations, tiredness
- Breathlessness at rest / on mild exertion
- Generalized swelling of body / puffiness on the face
- Severe headache and/or blurring of vision
- Passing less urine or burning micturition
- Leaking or bleeding per vagina
- Abnormal vaginal discharge / itching
Major Indications for referral to Higher Centre
If the mother is having any Previous history of:
- Stillbirth or neonatal loss
- Three or more spontaneous consecutive abortions
- Obstructed labour
- Preterm births
- Twins or multiple pregnancy
- Baby weight of 2.5 Kg or greater than 4 Kg
- Hypertension, pre-eclampsia, or eclampsia
- LSCS
- Diabetes in previous pregnancy
- Congenital illness anomaly of the baby
- Medical treatment for infertility
Major Indications for referral to Higher Centre in current pregnancy
- Rapid or difficult breathing/breathlessness at rest
- Body temperature greater than 38°C
- Jaundice
- Haemoglobin 7-11 g% even after 30 days of using IFA tablets
- Severe Anaemia (Hb 7 g%)
- Excessive vomiting, inability to take anything orally
- Low urinary output with high BP
- High BP (>140/90 mmHg) with or without proteins in the urine
- Multiple pregnancies
- Pregnancy haemorrhage
- Severe headache with impaired vision
- Convulsions or loss of consciousness
- Continuous severe stomach discomfort
- Decreased or absent foetal movements
- Foul-smelling discharge
- Pre-labour rupture of membranes for more than 12 hours in a term pregnancy
